Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena inspected the worst-affected areas of the city and drainage systems to assess the damage caused by heavy rains, according to an official statement released on Saturday. Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj also visited East Kidwai Nagar and Golf Links to inspect the areas and resolve waterlogging issues even though these fall under the jurisdiction of the centrally controlled NDMC, the Delhi government said in a statement.

He also discussed the Barapullah drain overflow with the central government, which has directed the relevant agency to clean it. Plans are being drawn up for a comprehensive roadmap to prevent future flooding, he said. Accompanied by NDMC Chief Secretary and Chairman, MCD Commissioner, PWD Principal Secretary and other senior officials, Saxena inspected the drains of Taimur Nagar, Barapulla Drain, ITPO, Tilak Bridge, Kushak Nallah, Golf Links and Bharti Nagar, he said .

During his visits, Saxena found all these drains clogged with garbage, debris and mud, leading to severe flooding in several parts of the city, the statement said. At the Taimur Nagar drain under the Municipal Corporation Department, Saxena observed that large amounts of silt and garbage deposits were preventing water from flowing freely, leading to major flooding in areas like Okhla, Taimur Nagar, Shaheen Bagh, Jasola, Bharat Nagar, Jamia Nagar and nearby posh colonies like New Friends Colony and Maharani Bagh, the statement said.

At the drains of ITPO and Tilak Bridge, maintained by the Public Welfare Department, Saxena found similar clogged drains due to dumping of garbage and debris, leading to backflow of water and inundating the entire stretch around ITO, he added. Union Minister and East Delhi MP Harsh Malhotra and New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj also accompanied the LG during his visits to their respective areas, the statement said.

Residents of Kushak Nallah, Golf Links and Bharti Nagar also complained of clogged drains and sewer lines, prompting the LG to direct officials of the New Delhi Municipal Committee to immediately flush out the drains and deploy additional pumps as required to remove waterlogging during heavy rains. Saxena expressed displeasure over the negligence and warned that any further monitoring would be taken seriously and strict action would be taken against the officials responsible.

He also gave strict instructions to remove all waste, debris and sludge from the drains within three to four days and report the completion of the task with photographic and video evidence. Saxena further stressed the importance of a comprehensive and foolproof water drainage plan for the capital to avoid future incidents of waterlogging.

He underlined the need to adopt long-term strategies rather than one-off crisis management measures, highlighting that his administration has prioritized monsoon preparedness from day one to ensure minimum inconvenience to the public. Delhi will be on orange alert due to heavy rain expected over the next four days, the IMD said in its seven-day forecast.
