Delhi Excise Policy Case: High Court to hear Arvind Kejriwal’s petition against CBI arrest today

The Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s appeal today challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the alleged Delhi excise policy case.

On July 1, the Rouse Avenue court denied CM Kejriwal’s request for two more video conference talks with his lawyers from Tihar Jail, ANI reported.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja rejected the application, holding that the circumstances as presented did not justify holding extrajudicial meetings beyond those already settled. The court observed that Kejriwal, who was arrested by the CBI in connection with the Delhi excise policy case, had filed a similar application, which was rejected on April 10, 2024.

Kejriwal’s lawyer said with over 30 active litigations around the world, the CM wanted additional meetings with the VC to examine their cases and ensure a fair trial.

The court also heard statements from the CBI, which claimed that during Kejriwal’s remand, he gave evasive and contradictory answers when asked about increasing profit margins for wholesalers under the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

Following these findings, the CBI stated that no further custodial interrogation of Kejriwal was required at this stage.

On June 26, the CBI arrested Arvind Kejriwal, national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), after a judge on vacation allowed the agency to question him in court ahead of his arrest in the Delhi excise policy case. The court directed the CBI to produce evidence supporting his arrest.

The Delhi High Court will now hear Kejriwal’s case challenging the validity of his imprisonment in the ongoing probe into the Delhi excise policy case.
