The Indian Coast Guard rescued 27 Bangladeshi fishermen whose fishing boat had been adrift in Indian waters after its steering mechanism suffered a breakdown that left them stranded at sea, officials said on Friday.

The quick rescue operation took place on Thursday, they said. “At approximately 1130 hours on April 4, the Indian Coast Guard ship ‘Amogh’ during its patrol on the Indo-Bangladesh International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) sighted a Bangladeshi fishing vessel (BFB) ‘Sagar II’ in the drifting within Indian waters,” the ICG said. in a sentence.

The ICG ship sent a boarding party to investigate. During the investigation it was discovered that the ship had “a fault in the steering system for the last two days and had been drifting since then, leading the ship to drift within Indian waters,” she said.

The BFB had “27 crew/fishermen on board.” The Indian Coast Guard’s technical team attempted to identify and rectify the defect, but noted that the ship’s rudder was “completely damaged” and could not be repaired at sea.

“As the sea state and weather conditions were conducive, it was decided that the distressed vessel will be towed to the Indo-Bangladesh IMBL and handed over to another Bangladeshi fishing vessel operating through the IMBL or to the Guard ship Bangladesh Coast Guard in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Indian Coast Guard and Bangladesh Coast Guard,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the regional headquarters of the Indian Coast Guard in Kolkata established communication with the Bangladesh Coast Guard and informed them about the incident and the action plan, officials said.

BCG deployed the Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCGS) vessel “Kamaruzzaman” to tow the BFB. “The BCG boat `Kamaruzzaman` arrived near IMBL at around 6.45 pm on April 4. ICGS `Amogh` handed over the 27 Bangladeshi fishermen along with their boat to the BCG boat `Kamaruzzaman`,” the statement said.

“The operation reflects the commitment of the Indian Coast Guard to safeguard precious lives at sea against all odds. These successful search and rescue (SAR) operations will not only strengthen the regional SAR structure but also enhance international cooperation with neighboring countries. This is in accordance with the Indian Coast Guard motto “Vayam Rakshamah”, which means “We protect”, he added.
