Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s order to start recruitment has once again brought a sparkle in the eyes of the unemployed in UP. Lakhs of unemployed are hopeful about getting appointed to the post of assistant teacher, especially in council primary schools. The Basic Education Department provides the most jobs and there has been no recruitment in it for the last five and a half years. The last recruitment of 69000 assistant teachers was in December 2018. Since then, teachers are retiring every year but the recruitment process is stalled.

In the case of 69000 teacher recruitment, the government had informed the Supreme Court on 12 June 2020 that till that time 51112 posts of teachers were vacant in council primary schools. Candidates claim that on an average eight thousand teachers are retiring every year. Thus, 32 thousand posts have become vacant in four years from 2021 to 2024. If we believe the claim of the candidates, then the information given by the government to the Supreme Court and the retirements in four years together make more than 80 thousand vacant posts. It is a different matter that for some time now, from the High Court to the RTI, the officials of the Basic Education Department have been shying away from telling how many posts of teachers are vacant in council schools.

The new commission will have to be activated
If action is taken on the Chief Minister’s order, then first of all the newly formed Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission will have to be activated. Now the appointment of teachers in council schools is to be done through this commission, but till now this commission has not been fully activated.
