On Sunday, residents of South Delhi’s Aya Nagar were seen protesting against the Delhi Government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) over damage to roads and persistent waterlogging in the area. Residents were seen shouting slogans against the Delhi government, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the MCD, Chhattarpur legislator Kartar Singh Tanwar and Aya Nagar District Commissioner Sheetal Chaudhary.

Residents also demanded the resignation of Kartar Singh Tanwar and Sheetal Chaudhary. Several areas of Delhi, Noida and Gurugram have been experiencing heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning since Thursday. Waterlogging and heavy traffic jams are some of the major problems faced by citizens.

Although the rain has brought relief from the scorching heat, images of heavy traffic jams and flooded streets have emerged in several areas including Sarita Vihar, Connaught Place, Palam airport, Okhla Phase 2 and Dhaula Kuan. Following heavy rains, two children who had left their homes to play in rainwater drowned on Friday after falling into a deep rainwater ditch in Delhi’s New Usmanpur area, police said.

The deceased were aged 8 and 10 and were residents of Som Bazaar, Gamri, in New Usmanpur area. According to the official, the two children had gone there to play in the rainwater when the incident occurred. In another incident, after heavy rain lashed the national capital, creating traffic jams and road blocks, three workers lost their lives when an under-construction wall collapsed in the Vasant Vihar area.

Preliminary reports indicated that the collapse was intensified by heavy rains, which also led to two trees falling in the basement where temporary cabins for workers were located. Earlier on Friday, one person died after a portion of a canopy at a departure terminal at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed amid heavy rains in Delhi. The incident occurred as Delhi-NCR was hit by a spell of heavy rains on Friday. All flight operations from Terminal 1 are suspended till further notice, the Civil Aviation Ministry said in an official statement.
