The Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan governments on Sunday signed an agreement for the implementation of the Parbati-Kalisindh-Chambal river linking project, PTI reported. The project is estimated to be worth Rs 72,000 crore.

According to the PTI report, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in the presence of Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and his Madhya Pradesh counterpart Mohan Yadav in Bhopal.

This linkage project will provide drinking and industrial water in 13 districts of eastern Rajasthan, Malwa and Chambal regions of Madhya Pradesh, besides providing irrigation in a minimum area of 2.8 lakh hectares each in both states, including supplementation of road tanks in the states.

According to PTI report, the linkage project will help in utilizing the available water resources of Chambal basin in an optimal and economical manner.

Yadav said that an important decision was taken to utilise the water flows of these rivers for Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan by taking up a programme after the signing of the MoU.

“Under this agreement, drinking water and irrigation facilities can be expanded in 13 districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Morena, Gwalior, Sheopur and Rajgarh. Every drop of water will be used in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, which will write a new chapter in the development of both states,” Yadav said.

Apart from resolving the water scarcity issue, Yadav identified possible agreements between the two states in tourism, medicine, mining and other sectors.

Sharma said that 13 districts of Rajasthan will benefit from this project.

“The river interconnection project will benefit MP and Rajasthan, which will also strengthen mutual relations. Some projects can be taken forward jointly between Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan,” he added.
