Five people, including a woman, are feared drowned in a waterfall near the backwater of Bhushi Dam in Pune’s Lonavala area on Sunday, PTI reported citing a police official.

According to the PTI report, the incident occurred around 3:00 pm.

The five people, who were there for a picnic, slipped near the waterfall and fell into the water body, the Lonavala police station official said.

“A search and rescue team is on site. Further details are awaited,” he added.

Maharashtra: Three teenagers drown in Painganga river in Yavatmal

Three teenagers drowned in the Painganga river in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district on Wednesday, police said, PTI reported.

The three teenagers, including two girls and a boy, aged between 14 and 17, drowned in the Painganga river in eastern Maharashtra, police said.

The incident took place in Savleshwar village in Umarkhed tehsil.

According to PTI, Kaveri Muneshwar (15) and Avantika Patil (14) had gone to the river bank to wash clothes and then entered the water to swim but started drowning, a police officer said.

Two boys nearby tried to help them, but one of them, identified as Chetan Kalpande (17), drowned along with the girls, an official said.

The other boy managed to swim to shore, but his condition was serious and he was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Nanded, Maharashtra, the police officer said.

The bodies of the deceased will be handed over to their families after the autopsy, he added.

Mentally unstable man electrocuted to death in Thane

Meanwhile, in another incident, a mentally unstable 35-year-old man was electrocuted while crossing a road in Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said on Wednesday, according to PTI.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Ulhasnagar town in Thane district of Maharashtra, where repair work of a road and sewage line was being carried out, an official at the Hill Line police station in Thane said. .

According to officials, the man accidentally came into contact with a power pole while crossing the street near a drainage construction site.

The electric current was passing through the pole and the man suffered a massive shock which resulted in his death, an official said, according to PTI.

Some people from the area took the man to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the official said.

Following the incident, residents alerted the electricity authorities and the power supply in the area was cut off.

Police sent the body to a government hospital for an autopsy and registered a case of accidental death, the official said, the news agency reported on Wednesday.
