Sanjay Leela Bhansali told in an interview with Galatta Plus, “I think these are women who have hidden many secrets within themselves and there are many layers in their characters. Courtesans or prostitutes… they are all different. -They are different. I am very interested in that power, how they sing, where they express themselves. Their pain is reflected in their dance and songs.”

Sanjay Leela Bhansali said, “They know the art of living, they know craftsmanship, they know embroidery and weaving, and the kind of jewelery they wear. They are courtesans of art. What are we?
