Five of the eleven major water reservoirs in Maharashtra’s Marathwada region have run empty, PTI reported.
Meanwhile, the Jayakwadi dam, the largest of them, currently has only four percent of its total storage capacity, officials said on Friday.
The Marathwada region covers the districts of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Beed, Parbhani, Hingoli, Dharashiv, Latur and Nanded.
Eleven major projects in this region do not face water availability due to poor rainfall last year, PTI reported.
The five reservoirs where the water level has dropped to zero per cent are Siddheshwar (Hingoli), Majalgaon and Manjara (both Beed), Nimna Terna and Sina Kolegaon (both Dharashiv).
The water level in seven other projects is as follows: Jayakwadi (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) 4.04 per cent, Nimn Dudhna (Parbhani) 6.23, Vishnupuri (Nanded) 15.58, Manar (Nanded) 22.63, Yeldari ( Parbhani) 26.66 percent and Penganga (Nanded) 29.23 percent, according to the report.
The current total water stock in these projects is 11.28 per cent on Friday, down from 38.64 per cent on the same day last year, PTI reported.
In Jayakwadi dam, on the same day last year, water reserves were 34.94 per cent, he said.
Even as the level of Manjara dam’s water reserves has hit rock bottom, civic authorities said no water cut will be implemented in the city.
“Currently, we are supplying water every four days in Latur. Although we are going to run out of storage, we will not face any problems for the next 3-4 months. Therefore, there will be no water outage in Latur city,” said a senior municipal official. saying.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar town receives water once in eight days depending on the water situation of Jayakwadi dam, a civic official said, adding that the work of laying a new parallel supply line is underway and is expected to be completed by end of this year.
