Two people were killed by lightning when rains, accompanied by strong winds, lashed parts of Telangana on Sunday.
Strong winds uprooted trees and in some places electricity poles fell.
The deaths were reported in Medak district, where a man and his grandson died. The deceased were identified as Sriramulu, 50, and Vishal, 11.
Five people were injured in a lightning strike in Adilabad district.
As electricity was cut in some cities and villages after poles collapsed due to strong winds in districts such as Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda and Bhupalapally, arrangements for Monday’s elections were affected.
Kothaguda in Mahabubabad district received 9.25 cm of rain. Bhupalapally received 8.5 cm, while Gorrakunta in Warangal district recorded 7.4 cm.
The rains also caused damage to rice stored in supply centers.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy inquired about the damage caused by strong winds, rains and lightning in several districts. He directed collectors of rain-affected districts and senior officials to be on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of heavy rainfall.
The CM asked the officials concerned to take appropriate measures in the areas worst affected by rains.
He expressed grief over the incident in which two people succumbed to lightning strike in Pedda Shankarampeta mandal in Medak district and said the government will provide support to the families of the victims.
The Chief Minister also directed authorities to provide better treatment to those injured in lightning incidents.
He assured farmers not to worry if their rice stock gets wet due to rains at procurement centres. Officials have been asked to purchase rice with moisture content, piled up at procurement centres.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for certain parts of the state. There is a possibility of light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by lightning, in several districts of Telangana, including Hyderabad, on May 13.
