Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said those who talk of “jihad” are tarnishing democracy and should remember that India is the land of Lord Ram and Lord Krishna. Adityanath addressed a public meeting in Farrukhabad in support of BJP MP Mukesh Rajput, who is seeking re-election from the Lok Sabha constituency. His comments came days after Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Maria Alam, niece of Congress leader Salman Khurshid, called for a “jihad vote” in favor of Naval Kishore Shakya, the INDIA block candidate from the seat of Farrukhabad Lok Sabha in Uttar Pradesh.
According to a statement issued by the BJP, Adityanath said that the people of SP and Congress are trying to create divisions on religious grounds.
“This is a conspiracy to Islamize India. Under this, they talk about voting jihad. There is no jihad in voting, we have to vote for the strongest democracy in the world so that our rights are protected,” he said. At a public meeting in Kaimganj earlier this week, Alam said that “voting jihad” was necessary in the current situation for the minority community to overthrow the BJP government.
Alam’s comments drew strong criticism from the BJP. The Uttar Pradesh police later filed a case against Alam and Khurshid. Attacking the opposition parties, Adityanath said: “Those who stole the rights of the poor… have started remembering jihad. They should know that the land of India belongs to Ram and Krishna and not to jihad.”
“You have seen India before and after 2014. Before 2014, India had lost trust in the world and was plagued by terrorism and Naxalism. The poor could not get the benefits of government schemes,” he said.
After 2014, a new image of India will be seen, he added. Addressing a public meeting at Bidhuna in Auraiya to seek votes for Kannauj MP and BJP candidate Subrat Pathak, Adityanath said Lord Ram performed Holi in Ayodhya recently and “such a magnificent event would not have been possible under the governments of SP, BSP and Congress who questioned the existence of Lord Ram.”
Addressing the UPA government, he said terror attacks had become a “routine affair” in the country during his tenure. “He Samajwadi Party, which supported the UPA government, went to the extent of withdrawing cases against terrorists. In response, the court reprimanded the SP, saying that if they discussed withdrawal of cases today, tomorrow they could honor them with Padma awards,” the prime minister said. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country is free from terrorism “Adityanath said.
