A comprehensive survey conducted by leading professors from various IIM centers across India found that more than 69 per cent of citizens had confidence in the central government services. The study identified Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh as states with the highest levels of trust in government services, demonstrating public trust.
Analysis of citizen experiences over the past five years revealed significant improvements across a variety of industries. Notably, there was a 72 per cent reduction in electricity outages as well as major infrastructure improvements in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh, particularly in water and power supply. The survey also found an increase in agricultural income, an increase in youth optimism and an increase in OTT video consumption, IANS reported.
According to the report, the study states: “The average trust in the Government of India across the country is 69.36 per cent. Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest level of trust in government services, indicating confidence public”.
“In the years 2019-2024 there was an average reduction of 72 per cent in electricity outages. Significant improvements in infrastructure were seen in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh, particularly in water supply and electricity. Gujarat and Maharashtra led in fostering youth optimism and reducing drug use,” the study found.
According to the report, there was also a significant increase in mobile phone use, which reflected socioeconomic changes in urban and rural areas. The labor market also improved and casual workers reported higher incomes. Overall satisfaction with public services has increased, with high levels of trust seen in areas such as Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
“Just over three-fifths (66.02 percent) of respondents reported that young people were more hopeful and optimistic about India’s development and growth than before. Farmers in Punjab, Haryana and Kerala reported that there are a notable increase in agricultural production. “The highest increase in agricultural income was recorded in Kerala, Haryana and Punjab, at 49 per cent, 47 per cent and 45 per cent respectively,” he said.
“Overall, higher satisfaction (68.59 per cent) was observed with public services. States like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh reported a high level of trust in the government. The increase in savings across the country due to increased access to cooking “Expenditure on gas, better healthcare and sanitation was Rs 12,096 per year. States, including Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, saw significant increases in annual savings and reductions in sick days,” she said.
The study, which surveyed more than 85,000 people across 22 regions and states in India, focused on substantial improvements in sanitation, road and rail transportation, electricity availability and digital connectivity. The project, led by professors from IIM Rohtak and supported by academic collaborators, provides unique insights into the opinions and experiences of citizens, thereby contributing to a better understanding of the socio-economic patterns of the country, the report added.
It was found that 69.1 percent of respondents believed road travel had improved over the past five years. 62.2 percent of respondents said train travel has improved over the past five years, while 70.7 percent said air travel has improved over the same period.
