The Patna-Kota Express train waited for a green signal for about half an hour at the Udi Mor Road station near Etawah in Uttar Pradesh on May 3 as the station master fell asleep while on duty. Taking note of the incident, the Agra Division, to which the station belongs, has asked the station chief to explain the reason for the negligence that could have resulted in an untoward incident.
“We have issued a charge sheet to the station head and disciplinary action is being taken,” Agra Railway Division PRO Prashasti Srivastava told reporters. Railway officials said that Udi Mor Road station is a small but important station before Etawah as trains heading towards Prayagraj from Agra and Jhansi pass through. According to sources, the train pilot had to blow the horn several times to wake up the station master and make him turn on the green signal for the train to pass.
“The station master admitted his mistake and apologized for the mistake. He said he was alone at the station because the switchman who was on duty with him had gone to inspect the track,” a source said. “Divisional Director of Railways (DRM) Tej Prakash Agrawal has taken serious note of the incident as his aim is to improve punctuality. He has been insisting and encouraging employees to improve punctuality, which has resulted in achieving 90 percent punctuality recently.
“However, the dereliction of duty by the station master has not only ruined the hard work and dedication of others but has also posed a serious risk to train operations,” the source said.
