Actor Sofia Vergara She was once determined to get rid of her melodic accent, fearing that her speech would limit her opportunities.
While talking about the roles she had been offered since her days on Modern Family, the actress revealed that she did not want to be cast as her character Gloria Pritchett in another comedy series. The actor said: “I can’t get rid of this accent, no matter what. I tried it at the beginning of my career. When I moved to Los Angeles, I thought, ‘I can’t believe Penelope Cruz or Salma Hayek don’t change their accent, they would have so many more opportunities.’ I’m going to do it.”
Vergara added: “Then I spent a lot of money and time teaching people, and it was a damn waste.” After reportedly spending 11 years on the ABC sitcom as Gloria, a Colombian bombshell and single mother, the actor opened up about the difficulties of finding a dramatic role.
“In a way, I was almost playing with myself,” she explained. “I never went to an acting class in my life. And when I decide to do something different, it’s difficult because that accent is beautiful, but I can’t be a scientist, I can’t be an astronaut.” Hiring a dialect teacher wasn’t the only preventive measure she took to advance her career. While Vergara revealed that she never lied to “get a job,” she confessed that she lied to her agents to get them to accept her when she moved to Los Angeles. “I said I could sing and dance. Why not? I didn’t think they were going to kick me out,” she laughed.
