Days after BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya filed a defamation case, RSS member Santanu Sinha on Tuesday clarified his social media post on “sexual exploitation” of women, saying that I did not intend to defame Malviya’s image.
Sinha also termed it humiliating that the Congress Party is spreading a “hate campaign” against Malviya and the BJP. He also criticized the BJP state unit (West Bengal), saying that he was astonished to see that no one from the state unit tried to know the “significance of the post, but played a dubious role”.
“I want to give a clear message that the post was not intended to defame Malviya but as a precaution against getting entangled in a honey trap, which was first brought to light by Tathagata Roy, former president of the state unit and former governor of Tripura with the phrase KAMINI KANCHAN,” Sinha said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
“Nowhere in the post are there any rumors about sexual exploitation of women by Amit Malviya. Rather, I have expressed my fear that Malviya will be dragged into a trap by unscrupulous party leaders to remain clinging to her position despite such a debacle in the recently held elections,” he added.
He also expressed his “heartfelt regret” and added that he has not written anything inappropriate in his post. He further said that he will not withdraw the charge.
“I, a Sangha Swayam Sevak, former State Secretary of ABVP and contestant in the State Assembly elections and Calcutta Municipal Corporation elections, do not want the Bharatiya Janata Party and its functionaries to be undermined in any way by “a misinterpretation of my position,” Sinha said.
Earlier on Monday, Congress sought Malviya’s removal from office following Sinha’s alleged June 7, 2024, “sexual exploitation” post.
At a press conference on Monday, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate said: “An RSS member, Shantanu Sinha, related to BJP leader Rahul Sinha, has said that the BJP’s IT cell chief, “Amit Malviya, has indulged in nefarious activities. He indulges in sexual exploitation of women not only in 5 star hotels but also in the BJP offices in West Bengal. The only thing we seek from the BJP is justice for women.”
Shrinate said an independent probe into the incident is only possible if Malviya is removed from office.
“The reality is that less than 24 hours after Prime Minister Modi took oath, serious allegations of sexual exploitation have been leveled against a very senior BJP functionary, the head of its IT cell. Today we seek the immediate removal of Amit Malviya de’ said the Congress leader.
On June 8, BJP’s Amit Malviya filed a defamation case against Sinha seeking an “unconditional apology” and also warned that he would sue Sinha if he did not withdraw the charge within three days of being notified.
“The nature of the allegations is extremely offensive to the extent that they falsely allege sexual misconduct allegedly committed by my client. The same is fatally detrimental to the dignity and reputation of my client, who, by virtue of his professional profile, is a public audience. Such malicious and malicious statements have been made deliberately to tarnish your reputation,” the notice said.
Malviya, through the notice, alleged ulterior motives and unlawful intentions to defame and tarnish his image. Sinha was asked to apologize and remove her position within three days from the date of the notice, which ends today, June 11.
He further mentioned that Malviya will take legal action against Sinha if he does not respond to the notice.
“I, the undersigned, therefore, request that you publicly apologize and withdraw/delete your defamatory statements made against my client on all public platforms within three (3) days of receipt of this legal notice, Otherwise, my client will be forced to take appropriate legal action against you, including prosecuting you for civil and criminal defamation at your own risk and expense. Furthermore, I request that you pay a sum of 10 million rupees as civil damages for the. mental harassment, agony and loss of reputation caused to my client through your Facebook post of June 7, 2024,” the notice said.
