The United States has not yet provided any reliable evidence of the involvement of Indian citizens in the assassination plot of a Khalistani terrorist in that country, Russia has claimed, accusing Washington of meddling in India’s internal affairs and the ongoing elections. In November last year, US federal prosecutors charged Indian national Nikhil Gupta with working with an Indian government employee in the foiled plot to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.
Pannun, wanted in India on terrorism charges, has dual American and Canadian citizenship. He has been designated a terrorist by the Union Home Ministry under the Anti-Terrorism (Prevention) of Unlawful Activities Act. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, when asked to respond to a Washington Post report claiming that India is trying to adopt policies like Russia and Saudi Arabia, she said:
“According to the information we have, Washington has not yet provided any reliable evidence of the involvement of Indian citizens in the preparation of the assassination of one GS Pannun. Speculation on this issue in the absence of evidence is unacceptable.” Washington lacks understanding of India’s national mentality and history and continues to make “baseless accusations” about religious freedoms in India, he said.
