Rohith Vemula’s mother Radhika Vemula met Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday and urged him to ensure that justice is given to the family. Reddy assured him that a fair investigation into the suicide of the University of Hyderabad student in 2016 would be carried out again and justice would be done, according to an official statement. Police have submitted a closure report to a local court in their investigation into the case of Vemula, who committed suicide fearing that his real caste would be revealed.
“We have opposed the closure report submitted by the police. We also express our concern over the issues they have mentioned in the report,” he said, adding that the competent authority to clarify the caste status is the Guntur district collector in neighboring Andhra Pradesh and not the police.
A petition will be filed with the appropriate court asking the magistrate to allow further investigation into the case, he said in a statement on Friday night. The police gave a clean chit to the accused, including current Haryana governor Bandaru Dattatreya and former BJP MLC N Ramchander Rao, citing lack of evidence in the case.
