Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday slammed former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi for his “election gimmick” comments over the terror attack on the Indian Air Force (IAF) convoy at Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir.
Channi on Sunday said the Poonch militant attack, in which an IAF corporal was killed and four personnel injured, was an “election stunt” for the benefit of the BJP. His comments sparked outrage from the BJP, which accused Congress of being disrespectful to soldiers and demanded an apology to the nation.
At an intellectual meeting in Lucknow, Singh said, “A former Punjab Chief Minister termed a terror attack on Air Force personnel as an election stunt, as it happened during elections. We have such people in our country.”
He further said that the BJP has cleared terrorism in the country. “There could still be some terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. Before the BJP government, there were terror attacks in most states,” he said.
Recalling the 2008 Mumbai attack, Singh said after the attack that the then Home Minister said that such small terror attacks continue to happen.
“In 2008, when I was party president, the Mumbai attack happened and several people lost their lives. The then home minister said that these small terror attacks continue to happen,” he said.
“If anyone tries to carry out any nefarious act, India can eliminate him from this side of the border and, if necessary, from the other side too. We no longer buy defense equipment from other countries. We have become self-authorized. dependent on the defense sector,” Singh added.
He also said that the BJP makes politics for the construction of a nation. “We want to develop a prosperous Bharat that is not only financially capable but can also lead in the fields of knowledge, spirituality and science,” Singh said.
He said that India, which is ranked 11th in GDP ranking, is currently the fifth largest economy in the world and added that in the coming years the country will become the third largest economy.
“India’s economy was at 11th position from 2004 to 2014. After this, Prime Minister Modi took office and under his leadership, in eight years, India’s economy jumped from 11th position to fifth. And there is a prediction that India will be among the top three economies in the world if it continues at the same pace,” the Defense Minister said.
Assuring people that Indian borders are completely secure, Singh said: “I request the opposition parties to say whatever they want but stop questioning the valor and bravery of Indian soldiers. On the issue of security national security and border security, all political parties, despite their political differences, must remain united, regardless of who is in power.
