The Manipur government has announced that all schools and colleges in the state will remain closed till Tuesday due to prevailing bad weather conditions, an official said on Monday, news agency PTI reported.
One person was killed and two injured when heavy rain and hailstorm lashed the state on Sunday and damaged several houses in different parts of the state, including Canchipur and Tera in Imphal West district and Thoubal district, the official said.

An order issued by the Directorate of Education late on Sunday night said that in view of the widespread destruction caused to many homes and facilities across the state due to today’s (Sunday) hail storm and in anticipation of what same in the coming days and taking into account security. For students in the state, all schools – government and private – will remain closed on May 6 and 7, PTI reported.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said in a Facebook post: “The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure against the risks posed by the current weather conditions. I urge everyone to stay updated and stay safe indoors. “The state government is taking all necessary measures.” necessary measures to protect lives and property and assist those who have been affected.”
Rains in Manipur: hundreds of houses damaged
Hundreds of houses were damaged in heavy rain accompanied by hailstorm that lashed the state, particularly in the Imphal Valley, on Sunday.
A 45-year-old man died in Yangdong, Kakching district, while his wife was injured after they were struck by lightning during rains on Sunday afternoon. The victim was tending his vegetable crop when the lightning struck him, PTI reported.
A 53-year-old man was hospitalized after being struck by lightning in Nambol in Bishnupur district.

The state government has directed deputy district commissioners to submit reports on damage in their districts due to heavy rain and hailstorm, PTI reported.
The India Meteorological Department had issued an “orange alert” for heavy to very heavy rain in four northeastern states, including Manipur, during the next 24 hours starting May 5.
