Marking the end of his 24-year rule in Odisha, BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday resigned as chief minister following his party’s defeat in the assembly elections in the state.
Patnaik handed over his resignation letter to Governor Raghubar Das at Raj Bhavan, sources said. Although several BJD leaders had gathered at Patnaik’s residence, he reached the governor’s house alone to tender his resignation.
The BJD supreme leader simply greeted the waiting journalists and left the premises after submitting his resignation letter. The BJP came to power in Odisha by winning 78 of the 147 assembly seats, while the BJP managed to win only 51 seats. The Congress got 14 constituencies and the CPI(M) got one, while three independent candidates also emerged victorious.
