Twenty people died due to heatstroke in Odisha over the last three days as the state reeled under an intense heat wave, according to an official statement.
Since Friday, different districts have reported a total of 99 deaths suspected of heatstroke. After autopsy and investigation, it was confirmed that 20 deaths were due to heatstroke, while two deaths were due to other causes, according to the statement issued by the state’s Special Relief Commission.
In the rest of the cases an investigation is being carried out, he added. Prior to this, 42 deaths suspected of heatstroke were reported, of which six cases were confirmed, and another six deaths were found to have occurred from other causes, the statement said.
The deaths were mainly reported from Bolangir, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Sonepur, Sundergarh and Balasore districts, officials said.
Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena and Special Relief Commissioner Satyabrata Sahu reviewed the situation with the district collectors on Sunday.
