Congress leader Rahul Gandhi He said on Monday that his family has always worked for the people of Rae Bareli parliamentary constituency, unlike Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who works in “the interest of Adani and Ambani”.
In his first election meeting in the constituency after his nomination, Gandhi said in Maharajganj that he was contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the Rae Bareli seat because his family has deep ties with the people here. He also spoke at rallies in Gurubaksganj, Lalganj and Kishundaspur.
Attacking the Modi government, he claimed that 22-25 top industrialists had waived loans worth Rs 16 lakh crore, which is equivalent to 24 years of money allocated under MGNREGA.
Rahul Gandhi said his grandmother Indira Gandhi, father Rajiv Gandhi and mother Sonia Gandhi have worked to improve the lives of people in Rae Bareli.
Considered a stronghold of the Gandhi family, the Rae Bareli seat had been represented by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi since 2004. Previously, the constituency was also represented by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
In his speech, Rahul Gandhi also accused the media of not showing the problems faced by farmers and unemployed youth and instead giving prominence to weddings in the families of top industrialists.
He said if the INDIA bloc comes to power, a list of poor families would be compiled and Rs 1 lakh a year (or Rs 8,500 a month) would be transferred to the bank account of a woman from each such family.
Gandhi also said that an INDIA block government would waive loans to small farmers and they would be provided with a legalized minimum common support price.
He reiterated that the Agniveer scheme for short-term recruitment in the defense forces would be scrapped and youth would be provided with permanent jobs in the armed forces with pensions.
Gandhi said the youth would get a year’s apprenticeship in public sector organizations and then, based on merit, permanent government jobs.
Rae Bareli will go to the polls in the fifth phase of the elections Lok Sabha elections on May 20.
