The Customs Department has made a big bust of laptop smuggling at the country’s largest container port Nhava Sheva, also known as Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Based on intelligence inputs, officials have recovered a large consignment of used laptops being imported from abroad. According to ANI, officers of Jawaharlal Nehru Custom House have seized 4600 laptops of various brands at Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva Port based on specific intelligence from Special Intelligence and Import Investigation Branch. The seized laptops are of Dell, HP, Lenovo and other brands. Apart from this, the officers have also seized 1546 old and used CPUs, which is the biggest seizure.
According to custom officials, these laptops and CPUs were imported from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Its supplier is from Hong Kong. The estimated value of the confiscated smuggled goods is Rs 4.11 crore. Following the seizure, the Special Intelligence and Investigation Branch (SIIB) conducted multiple searches in Mumbai and Delhi, resulting in the arrest of the mastermind cum owner of the importing firm. Custom officials at Nhava Sheva said the action is part of the ongoing efforts to curb smuggling activities.
In another similar operation, Mumbai Customs officials today seized 32.79 kg gold worth Rs 19.15 crore in two separate cases based on spot profiling at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The passengers had hidden the gold in undergarments and baggage. Customs officials have arrested both the passengers.
At New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Airport, Customs officers arrested two passengers coming from Moscow on the basis of profiling. 998 grams of foreign gold worth Rs 67 lakh was recovered from them. Both the passengers have been arrested under the Customs Act 1962 and further investigation is being conducted against them.
