The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha, whose term ends on June 16.
According to sources, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal-United (JDU) pledged their support after the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the formation of the Party Bharatiya Janata. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) administration is expected to take place on June 8. Both parties are expected to present formal letters of support at an alliance conference, ANI reported.
According to the report, the Election Commission of India has announced the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections for 542 of the 543 constituencies, with the BJP winning 240 seats and the Congress 99. This is a decrease from 303 BJP seats in 2019 and 282 seats in 2014. In contrast, the Congress saw a huge surge, gaining 99 members, up from 52 in 2019 and 44 in 2014.
The INDIA bloc surpassed 230 votes, posing fierce competition and surprising exit poll projections, the report said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won a third term, but the BJP will need cooperation from other coalition parties, including JD(U) president Nitish Kumar and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu. After counting of votes for the 2024 Lok Sabha election results, the BJP was 32 seats short of the majority level of 272. This is the first time since 2014 that the BJP has not won a majority on its own, adds the ANI report.
According to the news agency report, the NDA leaders are scheduled to meet later today at Prime Minister Modi’s house. Opposition group INDIA will also meet today and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will invite alliance leaders to his house. Following the successful results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the INDIA group leaders will plan their next action.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi thanked the people for their vote and announced that the BJP-led NDA would establish its third consecutive government. He considered the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as a victory for the will of a developed India, “Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas”, as well as for the strong faith of the people in the Constitution of India, the report added.
“On this holy day, the NDA is confirmed to form the government for the third time. We are grateful to the people, who have reposed full faith in the BJP and the NDA. This is the victory of the world’s largest democracy, “It is a victory of firm faith in the Constitution of India, it is the victory of Viksit Bharat determination, it is the victory of “Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas”, Prime Minister Modi said in his speech at the BJP headquarters on Tuesday.
