He Congress has alleged that the Modi government on Sunday had made “zero progress” towards the demand for recognizing Marathi as a classical language, citing the language’s 2,200-year-old literary heritage, PTI reported.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the demand has been pending with Prime Minister Modi’s government for the last 10 years.
According to the PTI, former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had constituted a committee comprising Marathi language experts under the chairmanship of eminent scholar Prof. Ranganath Pathare, it noted.
The report was submitted to the Union government, and former CM Chavan wrote to then culture minister Shripad Naik requesting him to fulfill the demand in July 2014, Ramesh said in a post on X.

“Ten years later, Modi Sarkar has not made any progress on this front,” he said, PTI reported.
Ramesh also pointed out that between 2004 and 2014, the Manmohan Singh government had given classical language status to the following languages: Tamil (2004), Sanskrit (2005), Kannada (2008), Telugu (2008), Malayalam (2013). and hates (February 2014), according to PTI.
“Modi Sarkar has given classical language status to zero languages,” he said.

It is certainly not a branch of any other language and has evolved independently of local dialects, the Congress leader said, the news agency reported.

The Congress has released a list of star activists for the 2024 Maharashtra Lok Sabha elections, which includes top party leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and others, ANI reported.
According to the list released by the Congress, the leaders would campaign under section 77 (1) of the Representation of People Act, 1951, for the fifth phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra, which are scheduled to be held this month .
