President Droupadi Murmu on Friday appointed NDA Parliamentary Party leader Narendra Modi as prime minister-designate, PTI reported. The new government will be sworn in on Sunday afternoon.
On Friday night, Murmu handed over the appointment letter to Modi when he visited her at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Earlier, leaders of the BJP-led NDA had called up Murmu and handed over letters of support to Modi, who was elected leader of the NDA Parliamentary Party.
Speaking to the media at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan, Modi said that the President has named him the next Prime Minister of the country.
“The president asked me to work as prime minister-designate and informed me about the swearing-in ceremony,” Modi said, adding that he informed the president that they would be comfortable if the event was held on the night of June 9. .
He said Rashtrapati Bhavan will work out the details of the oath-taking ceremony on Sunday when it hands over the list of the Council of Ministers to the President.
“This 18th Lok Sabha is an important milestone towards fulfilling those dreams when the country celebrates 100 years of independence in 2047,” Modi said.
This 18th Lok Sabha is a House of new energy, youthful energy, and people have given the NDA government one more chance, Modi said.
The BJP-led NDA won 293 seats in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections and enjoys majority in the 543-member House.
PM Modi meets BJP veterans Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met BJP veterans LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi at their residences in Delhi, before calling for the formation of the government for a third consecutive term at the Centre, PTI reported.
Modi visited Advani soon after he was elected leader of the NDA parliamentary party, leader of the BJP parliamentary party and leader of the BJP in Lok Sabha.
According to the PTI report, after meeting Advani, he visited the residence of Joshi, former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Later, Modi was scheduled to go to the Rashtrapati Bhawan to call President Droupadi Murmu to demand the formation of the government.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 293 seats, of which 240 belonged to the BJP in the 543 Lok Sabha seats.
