Congress Parliamentary Party president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday described the Lok Sabha election results as a “political and moral defeat” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said he has lost the moral right to leadership.
Addressing newly elected MPs in Parliament’s Central Hall, he said that far from taking responsibility for the failure, the Prime Minister intends to take the oath of office again on Sunday.
“We do not expect him to change the substance and style of his government, nor to take into account the will of the people,” said Sonia Gandhi.
He said the prime minister had sought the mandate solely in his name, excluding both his party and its allies, but suffered a political and moral defeat.
“In reality, he has lost the mandate he sought and has therefore also lost the right to leadership. However, far from taking responsibility for the failure, he intends to be sworn in again tomorrow. We do not expect him to change the substance and style of his government, nor take cognizance of the will of the people,” he stated.
“That is why, as members of the CPP, we have a special obligation to be vigilant, vigilant and proactive in holding him and his new NDA government accountable.
“We can no longer and must not bulldoze Parliament as we have done for a decade. The orders of the ruling establishment will no longer be allowed to disrupt Parliament, capriciously mistreat members or push through laws without due and proper consideration and debate .
“Parliamentary committees can no longer and should not be ignored or ignored as they have been since 2014. Parliament will no longer be gagged and stifled as it has been for the last 10 years,” the CPP chief said.
Observing that the times ahead were challenging, he told the Congress parliamentarians that they must be vigilant to avoid any attempt to increase polarization and erosion of the secular and democratic values enshrined in our Constitution by the ruling cabal.
All such attempts must be frustrated, he stated.
He Congress The leader also said that the Congress is also being strengthened by the strength of the INDIA bloc allies.
“Our numbers in Parliament have increased significantly. Not only is the Indian National Congress a large contingent in the Lok Sabha, but we are also bolstered by the strength of our INDIAN partners, some of whom have made impressive comebacks.” , said.
He also said that the Bharat Jodo yatras were “historic movements”.
“Rahul deserves special thanks for his tenacity and determination to continue fighting in the face of unprecedented personal and political attacks. He also very strongly shaped our narrative on the guarantees and protection of the Constitution,” he said.
Sonia Gandhi, however, warned MPs to reflect on what needs to be done to improve their standing in states where performance has been below expectations.
