To make life easier for common passengers, Indian Railways has decided to adopt the ‘Janta’ system. Keeping up with its Vande Bharat luxury train scheme, Indian Railways has now decided to build tens of thousands of general and non-AC coaches to reduce the shortage and enable the common man to travel with ease. Complaints about overcrowding in trains have been increasing, with pictures and videos going viral from time to time.

The Indian Railways has planned production of around 10,000 non-AC coaches over the next two years. According to officials, around 10,000 coaches are being completed during fiscal 2024-25 and 2025-26, with a record number of over 5,300 general coaches.

In the financial year 2024-25, Indian Railways plans to manufacture 2,605 general coaches including Amrit Bharat general coaches, 1,470 non-AC sleeper coaches including Amrit Bharat sleeper coaches, 323 SLR coaches including Amrit Bharat SLR coaches, 32 High Capacity Parcel Vans and 55 Pantry Coaches.

In FY 2025-26, Railways plans to manufacture 2,710 general coaches including Amrit Bharat general coaches, 1,910 non-AC sleeper coaches including Amrit Bharat sleeper coaches, 514 SLR coaches including Amrit Bharat SLR coaches, 200 high capacity parcel vans and 110 pantry coaches.

Demand for rail services is dynamic and decreases or increases depending on seasonal variations, passenger traffic growth, etc. Wagon requirements are based on these factors and are included in the annual Wagon Production Schedule. Wagon production is usually proportional to demand.
