Three people were killed and one seriously injured when a speeding sports utility vehicle (SUV) collided with another car in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad city on Monday morning, police said.

The accident took place at a T-junction on the Sardar Patel Ring Road around 5 am, they said.

The images showed beer cans in the truck and some scattered near the remains of the car.

The license plate of the SUV belonged to another vehicle, the sources said.

The State Monitoring Cell (SMC), which monitors illegal liquor sales in Gujarat, denied reports that its team was chasing the van.

Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Police West Neeta Desai said the SUV driver was in their “custody” and an inquiry had been ordered to find out if he was speeding due to involvement in any illegal activity.

He said the SUV coming from Vaishnodevi Circle hit the other car when the latter was turning towards Rajpath Club Road.

The deceased were identified as the occupant of the SUV Om Prakash (37), the driver of the other vehicle Ajit Kathi (32) and its occupant Manish Bhatt (52), both residents of Viramgam town in Ahmedabad, he said.

Om Prakash and the SUV driver, Rajendra Sahu, who was seriously injured, were residents of Rajasthan, he said.

“The SUV which was heading towards Bopal collided with another car which was coming from Bopal side and was turning right towards Rajpath Club Road. Two occupants of the car and one person who was in the SUV died on the spot. The driver of the SUV was undergoing treatment at a hospital,” Desai said.

After being alerted to the incident, which was also captured on CCTV cameras, local police and fire crews rushed to the scene to rescue the victims from the rubble.

The SMC denied reports that its team was chasing the SUV.

“We would like to clarify that none of our teams were chasing that SUV. It was just a rumour spread by some people,” SMC Deputy Superintendent of Police KT Kamaria said in a statement. PTI PJT GK
