Two people broke into the office of a housing finance company and absconded with gold worth Rs 4.92 crore. Nashik city of Maharashtrapolice said on Monday, PTI reported.
The incident occurred at the Indira Heights shopping complex in the old Gangapur Naka area in the early hours of Saturday when two unidentified people barged into the company’s office, an official said, according to PTI.
Gold ornaments worth Rs 4.92 crore belonging to 222 clients were kept in a security locker of the finance company, he said.
The theft came to light when one of the employees found the locker empty on Saturday afternoon, following which the police were informed, the official said.
According to PTI, during the investigation, CCTV footage from the office showed two unidentified persons entering the premises from a window in one of the cabins and using the office keys to open the security locker, leaving with the jewelry, he said.
One of the people was wearing white PPE gear, while the other was wearing a white cap and a mask on his face, the official said.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway, he added.
Gold, electronics worth Rs 8.37 crore seized at Mumbai airport
Meanwhile, in another incident, the Customs department seized 12.47 kg of gold and electronic items valued at Rs 8.37 crore during a four-day operation at the Bombay International Airport and arrested 10 people, an official said on Monday, news agency PTI reported.
The operation was carried out from April 29 to May 2 at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
Several passengers found gold hidden in the form of wax dust, gold-layered clothing, crude jewelry and ingots, in a water bottle, on their bodies and in their rectums.
Five passengers were detained for this reason, the official said in a statement.
An Indian national, working as a contractual staff at the Mumbai International Airport, was intercepted by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and handed over to Customs sleuths, PTI reported.
During his search, gold dust in the form of wax (eight pieces) weighing 2.58 kg was found hidden in his water bottle. The person was arrested, according to the statement, PTI reported.
In another case, four Indian nationals traveling from Dubai were intercepted and found carrying 3,335 kg of gold hidden in their underwear, the clothes they were wearing and in their rectum, PTI reported.
The four were later arrested, according to the statement.
Six gold bars weighing 1.5 kg of pipes were also recovered from under the seat of an aircraft, he said.
