Three people were injured and vehicle movement was disrupted when trees were uprooted in several parts of Kolkata following Cyclone Remal, which made landfall in West Bengal and neighboring Bangladesh, officials said on Monday.
Reports of uprooting of trees have been received in Southern Avenue, Lake Place, Chetla, DL Khan Road, Dufferin Road, Ballygunge Road, New Alipore, Behala, Jadavpur, Golpark, Hatibagan, Jagat Mukherjee Park and College Street as well as in the city . “It’s next to the Salt Lake area,” they said. Around 68 trees were uprooted in Kolkata and another 75 in the nearby Salt Lake and Rajarhat area.
“Waterlogging was reported at several places including Southern Avenue, Lake View Road, Pratapaditya Road, Tollygunge Phari, Alipore and Central Avenue, leading to diversion of traffic,” a senior Kolkata traffic police officer said.
Three people were injured in the Manicktala area after the cyclone hit, although the exact cause was still unknown, an official said.
Meanwhile, train services on the Sealdah South section of the Eastern Railway resumed at 9 am after being suspended for three hours in the morning, an ER official said.
Flight services from Kolkata airport also resumed on Monday morning after being suspended for 21 hours due to the cyclone, a senior Airports Authority of India (AAI) official said.
However, Kolkata Metro operations were disrupted between Girish Park and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar stations due to waterlogging of tracks at Park Street and Esplanade stations, another official said. Metro services are normal from Dakshineswar to Girish Park and from Kabi Subhas to Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, he said.
Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said the municipal corporation was trying to address the situation on a war footing. “The situation is not that much worse compared to what it was when Cyclone Amphan hit. Trees are being removed to make way for traffic. Drainage pumps are also running at full power,” Hakim told PTI.
Salt Lake Mayor Krishna Chakraborty said uprooted trees have been removed and roads are clear for traffic.
Meanwhile, Governor CV Ananda Bose said in a message issued by Raj Bhavan: “We are all very relieved that no casualties have been reported there. Cyclone Remal is weakening. The people of Bengal can bravely face it. We are maintaining “Monitor the situation. If there is any need, the doors of Raj Bhavan are open to all.” Bose has also constituted a task force at Raj Bhavan.
