Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth says that criticism of Marvel superhero movies from cinema giants like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola seemed “harsh.”
Scorsese made headlines in 2019 when he called superhero movies a “theme park experience” and “not cinema.” Coppola then went a step further and called superhero movies “despicable.” Hemsworth, known for playing fan-favorite superhero Thor in multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, said he has been a fan of the two filmmakers due to the extensive nature of their filmography.
“It felt harsh and it bothers me, especially from the heroes. It was a surprise to me, people criticizing the superhero space. Those guys had movies that didn’t work either. We all have. When they talked about what happened to superheroes, I thought, ‘Great, tell that to the billions who watch them.’ Were they all wrong?’” the Australian actor told a UK media outlet.
Regarding Scorsese’s argument that superhero movies had an adverse impact on independent and mid-budget cinema, Hemsworth offered a counterpoint. “Movie attendance did not change thanks to superheroes, but thanks to smartphones and social networks. Superhero movies actually kept people in theaters during that transition and now people are coming back. That is why they deserve a little more recognition,” he stated.
Hemsworth also addressed criticism of superhero movies by actors who appeared in the MCU. Although he didn’t mention any names, his comments were apparently directed at his Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) co-star. Christian bale, who had once complained that acting in front of a green screen was “monotony.” Another of Hemsworth’s co-stars, Idris Elba, had said it was “torture” to film a Marvel movie. “I grew up watching a soap opera. And it used to bother me when actors later talked about the show with guilt or shame. Humility helps a lot. One of the older actors from Home and Away. [1988] He said, “We don’t get paid to make good lines sound good, we get paid to make bad ones work.” That stuck with me,” she said.
Hemsworth, who appeared as Thor in eight MCU films, said that if he ever played the superhero again, he would try to do something different. “If he ever returned to [Thor], I would wonder how we could change it back. I desperately wanted something to scare me. And Furiosa did it,” she said, referring to her upcoming film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
