Calling the Bharatiya Janata Party “shameless”, Congress leader and party candidate from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor on Saturday claimed that the freezing of the party’s bank account amid the campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections has played a “negative role,” reported news agency ANI.
“Unfortunately, the freezing of our bank accounts in the midst of campaigning for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections has played a negative role, some candidates have felt that they have not received adequate financial support… in some places, there is no doubt that the Congress is fighting these elections with one hand tied behind its back, just like the AAP has its leaders in jail. We are finding that the BJP is quite shameless in this matter,” Tharoor told reporters.
He also questioned the attacks carried out on Rahul Gandhi’s helicopter and the helicopters of DMK leaders, ANI reported.
“They have been raiding Rahul Gandhi’s helicopter and DMK leaders’ helicopters, has anyone raided the media of any BJP leader…this is unilateral behavior on part of the BJP government. Try to win the elections in a fair and equitable manner and not tying the hands of the opposition…,” he added, ANI reported.
After the Telangana police approached the court seeking permission to continue the investigation in the death case of PhD Rohith Vemula, Tharoor inquired about who was being “mistreated” by Vemula’s instruction.
“Look, I have to read the entire police report. The fact is that a young, intelligent boy was driven to suicide because of the way he was treated. So, if he suffered, we have yet to understand why he suffered. Why do people mistreated him and who he received instructions about. They were treating him like this,” he said about the Rohith Vemula case, ANI reported.
Rohith Vemula committed suicide in January 2016, allegedly upset by the disciplinary action taken against him by the Central University of Hyderabad, where he was pursuing a PhD.
Earlier in the day, Rohith Vemula’s family met Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and lodged a complaint urging the Congress government in the state to re-investigate the case.
Vemula was found hanging from a ceiling fan in a hostel room on January 17, 2016. He was allegedly upset over the disciplinary action taken against him by the university.
