As votes are counted in Tamil Nadu, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-Congress combine was seen sweeping Lok Sabha Elections 2024 in the state, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to open its account in the state, ANI reported.
All 39 Tamil Nadu seats were voted in a single phase on April 19 in the Lok Sabha polls.
Voter turnout in the state was 72.09 percent.
According to ANI, DMK leads with 21 seats, Congress leads with nine seats, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi with two seats, Communist Party of India with two seats, Communist Party of India (Marxist) with two seats and Pattali Makkal . Katchi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Indian Union Muslim League lead with 1 each.
In Coimbatore, BJP state president K Annamalai trails DMK’s Ganapathy Rajkumar by 22,881 votes.
In south Chennai, BJP’s Tamilisai Soundararajan trails DMK’s Tamizachi Thangapandian by 36,346.
Meanwhile, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is leading with 175991 votes against Sivasamy Velumani R. of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
DMK’s Dayanidhi Maran leads with 63,631 votes against Bharatiya Janata Party’s Vinoj.
From Sivaganga Congress, Karti P Chidambaram leads with 63368 votes against All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Xavierdass A.
Besides, Congress` Manickam Tagore leads from Virudhunagar by 2129 votes against Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam leader Vijayaprabhakaran V.
In 2019, the DMK-led alliance swept the Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu, winning 38 of 39 seats.
The BJP-led NDA crossed the majority mark at the top and the INDIA bloc crossed 200, defying all exit poll predictions.
Around 642 million people voted in the Lok Sabha elections held in seven phases over a mammoth period of six weeks. The vote counting began with mail-in ballots amid tight security measures.
The BJP is seeking a third consecutive term in power, while the opposition, under the umbrella of the INDIA bloc, is seeking to wrest power from the ruling party.
Most exit polls predicted a consecutive term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with quite a few of them projecting a two-thirds majority for the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
