A special CBI court sentenced a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) scientist to five years in jail along with a hefty fine of Rs 1.10 lakh in a bribery case in Nagpur, officials said on Wednesday, reported the ANI news agency.
The verdict was issued in connection with a Rs 15,000 bribery case in Nagpur that emerged in 2015.
Bipin Jambholkar, the convict, was a Grade A scientific officer who was nodal officer of BIS Nagpur at the time of the incident, ANI reported.
Following a complaint, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case on March 9, 2015 against Jambolkar, who was serving as Scientist-C (Batch Cell) in BIS Legal and Enforcement Activities.
After an investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet on February 26, 2016 against Bipin.
During the trial that lasted eight years, the court examined 15 witnesses and the CBI prosecutor presented 91 documents plus other evidence that withstood judicial scrutiny and led to the conviction of the accused, ANI reported.
“The court, after the trial, found the accused guilty and convicted him accordingly. 15 witnesses were examined and the prosecution produced 91 documents during the trial, which stood the test of the trial, resulting in the conviction of the accused,” the CBI said. On Wednesday.
In another incident, a 45-year-old man lost his life when he resisted his drunk elder brother’s attempt to attack their mother with a knife in Nagpur city, police said on Monday, PTI reported.
The accused, identified as Dilip Gokhale, has been arrested, PTI reported.
The incident occurred on Sunday night when Dilip (51) tried to attack his mother in a drunken state at their house in Timki area, PTI reported.
“Dilip verbally abused his mother and pulled out a knife with the intention of harming her. His brother Gaurav Gokhale tried to hold Dilip down but he suffered a fatal injury to his throat,” an official said, PTI reported.
Gokhales’s neighbors alerted the Tehsil police. Police took the injured man to Mayo Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
