Bengaluru, which broke the 133-year-old record for highest single-day rainfall in June, received 111 mm of rain on June 2, PTI reported quoting Met department officials.
N Puviarasan, scientist at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru, confirmed to PTI that June 2 saw the highest single-day rainfall in June in 133 years. He further added that only the rainfall received on June 1 and 2, which amounted to 140.7 mm, exceeded the monthly average for June.
According to user “X” @Bnglweatherman, according to IMD, June 2 recorded 111 mm, which surpassed the June average of 110.3 mm, in a single day.
He further said that the highest single-day rainfall in June was recorded on June 16, 1891.
The record rainfall also paralyzed Bengaluru in many places, particularly in Jayanagar, where residents posted photographs of fallen trees on social media, according to the PTI report.
A tree also fell onto the Metro tracks near Trinity station, causing inconvenience to commuters on Sunday night.
In addition to the fallen trees, flooded streets caused inconvenience to people.
According to CS Patil, director, Bengaluru IMD Centre, the southwest monsoon has further advanced over Karnataka and a yellow alert has been issued for some districts till June 5.
“Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada in coastal Karnataka, Bagalkote, Belgavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Koppal and Vijayapura in north interior Karnataka and Ballari, Bengaluru (rural and urban), Chikkaballapura, Davangere, Chitradurga, Hassan , Mysuru, Tumakuru “Heavy rain is likely to fall in south interior Karnataka in the next two days,” he added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said he would soon visit rain-affected areas for inspections.
“We will hold a meeting of officials after the Legislative Council elections and resolve the rain-related issues,” he said while briefing reporters at Vidhana Soudha.
